District of Columbia authorities removed problem gambling fund from the proposed 2024 budget. However, according to online sports betting experts, the law requires the district to use a portion of the sports betting review to prevent gambling addiction.
According to Korean sportsbook sources, the district did not appropriate any amount towards preventing and treating the gambling problem. In the past three years, DC approved $200,000 for the services. However, they did not spend any money.
Based on the Sports Wagering Lottery Amendment Act of 2018, the first $200,000 from sports betting revenue tax will go to Neighborhood Safety and Engagement and Early Childhood Development funds.
Problem Gambling Fund Removed from Budget
Senior VP of the American Gaming Association (AGA) Chris Cylke said the district’s latest “misstep” on gaming failed to satisfy its duties.
In its statement, AGA expressed its support for problem gambling funding in the city after the DC Committee on Health heard evidence from Jeremy Kudon of Sports Betting Alliance on March 30.
The AGA and other industry stakeholders have criticized several choices by DC’s gambling framework, including awarding a no-bid contract to Intralot to run the only district-wide sports betting app, GambetDC.

At a council meeting in Washington, DC, Gambet was officially labeled a “failed enterprise” last year after the sports betting monopoly fell short of its revenue goals. However, DC council chair Kenyan McDuffie remarked on July 13 that Gambet’s problems have existed since the game’s release.
At $12.6m, February’s sports betting handle was 34.0 percent lower than the $19.1m recorded in February 2022 and 21.9 percent lower than the $18.5m in January this year in DC. However, the month’s gross gaming income was $1.2m, a 62.0 percent increase over the $740,552 earned in the previous year.
